2025 CJA Brown Bag Lunch Event

On April 10, 2025, several attorneys representing the Federal Defenders Office and the CJA panel attorneys attended the 2025 CJA Brown Bag Event at the federal courthouse in Montgomery. Judges in attendance were Chief District Judge Emily Marks, District Judge Austin Huffaker, Senior District Judge Myron Thompson, Chief Magistrate Judge Stephen Doyle, Magistrate Judge Jerusha Adams, Magistrate Judge Kelly Pate, and Magistrate Judge Chad Bryan.
The attendees were greeted by Chief Judge Marks and Chief Magistrate Judge Doyle before the floor was open to a roundtable discussion. The judges shared concerns from their perspective on the bench but also heard the practical concerns of the attorneys serving in the district. Topics ranged from client access issues to scheduling concerns to accessibility issues.
Chief Judge Marks updated the attendees on an upcoming standing order and improved services being offered to attorneys practicing in the Middle District. Judge Pate discussed future programs, including new opportunities related to pro se inmate litigation as well as the Pro Se Assistance Program.
The attendees also heard from CJA Voucher Analyst Deena Harris who led an extensive Q&A on the CJA voucher process and provided important insight for CJA practitioners.
