Request an Excuse from Jury Service

If you believe you should be temporarily excused from jury service, you must submit your request in writing, separately from the questionnaire. The Court does not grant verbal excusals from jury service. All requests are reviewed and signed off on by our judges.

Your written request must include:

  1. Your name and 9-digit participant number (located to the right of your name and address on the summons)
  2. The reason you are unable to serve
  3. The date you will be available for service, if applicable

How to submit your request

  • By mail: Include your request in the self-addressed return envelope along with your completed questionnaire and the bottom portion of your summons.
  • By email: jury@almd.uscourts.gov — Judges may request your questionnaire before granting a request submitted by fax or email.
  • By fax: Contact the Jury Administrator at (334) 954-3950 for the fax number.

Last-minute requests, except for illnesses or emergencies, are difficult to accommodate. You will be notified by automated phone call whether your request was granted or denied. You may also check your request status by calling the Code-a-Phone number (888) 299-4959 and entering your 9-digit participant number.
