On December 8, 2021 U.S. District Court Judge R. Austin Huffaker and his chambers staff spent time volunteering at the Montgomery Area Food Bank. The Food Bank is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, doing everything possible to combat hunger and food insecurity, and services 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties. The Food Bank doesn’t only distribute food and resources to emergent needs, but they offer training towards healthier outcomes and self-sufficiency.

Despite being called the Montgomery Area Food Bank, the organization is responsible for four smaller Food Banks in Tuscaloosa, Selma, Auburn and Dothan. Their support extends to more than 800 local community agencies throughout 24,921 square miles of metropolitan and remotely rural areas, and their efforts are orchestrated by fewer than 30 professionals who are aided by a daily average of 10-15 unpaid volunteers, like Judge Huffaker’s staff.  (Of course, this is all done at no cost to those receiving assistance.)

The Food Bank Volunteer Center features 2,000 square feet of space to host even more volunteer groups and individuals who want to make a difference in our community! Volunteering is a great way to build your team, while working on a community-focused project. To volunteer, please fill out their Volunteer Application, and e-mail it to Teressa Millwood or call her at 334-245-7284.

Volunteering and/or hosting a Fund and Food Drive have become outstanding ways for our community to impact the Food bank’s mission to feed individuals and families in need across Alabama!  Every grocery item donated helps. Every dollar donated provides an additional 5.4 meals directly to those who are struggling to put food on the table.
